 THIRD GRADE UPDATE   1-5-09

 

RELIGION – The students will learn that the Apostles’ Creed summarizes what Catholics believe.

 

ENGLISH – We will begin a writing unit this week.  The students will use time-order words to put instructions in step-by-step order.

                                                                          

SPELLING – This week’s words contain the /oi/ vowel sound.

coin            soil             noise          boy             toy              oil

spoil           point           boil             join             joy              foil

         

Review words – are, give

Challenge words – moist, destroy

 

READING This week’s story is, What Do Authors Do?  The children will learn to follow steps in a process.  They will decode and identify words that contain silent consonants.  Vocabulary words are – authors, difficult, information, libraries, suggestions, manuscript, persistent, publishers, rejection, illustrators, historical societies, and diaries.  Please review them with your child.

 

MATH – We will review the multiplication facts from 0 to 5 for the chapter test on Thursday.  I’ll send a study guide home on Tuesday to help the children prepare for the test.  We will also study 6x6, 6x7, 6x8, 7x7, and 8x8 by learning multiplication stories!

 

SIMPLE SOLUTIONS – Friday’s quiz will cover lesson 57 to 60.   Please check your child’s Simple Solutions homework every night and review any questions he/she misses. Friday’s test comes directly from the daily assignments.

 

HEALTH – We will begin a unit on digestion.

 

FYI – Attached is this week’s oral reading assignment.  At this time, the goal is to have the students reading fluently and without errors at 92 words per minute.
